The Embassy of Finland celebrates Finland’s 100 years of independence by organizing an exhibition of five Finnish photography artists in Kaunas. “Independence Through the Lenses” will be opened in M.K.Čiurlionis Art Museum on September 22nd and continues until October 29th. The artists to be shown are Sara Hornig, Riitta Päiväläinen, Harri Pälviranta, Juha Suonpää and Juuso Westerlund.

Harri Pälviranta´s series “Military Dispatch”  and Juha Suonpää´s video installation “IBIDEM” go through the Finnish wars; Pälviranta at national and individual level and Suonpää concretely in the town of Tampere, which was one of the main battle fields of the Finnish civil war in 1918.

Sara Hornigs “Half of Us” –series reveals the life alongside depression. One of five Finns suffers from depression during his lifetime.  Loneliness creates a space with no entrance for the others.

Riitta Päiväläinen’s Imaginary Meetings links presence and absence. The scenery and space Päiväläinen has created allows us to imagine what might have happened previously, or what might be yet to come.

Juuso Westerlund returns to Kainuu region where the stories for Finland´s national epic Kalevala where collected. What would these famous Finnish characters and heroes from the epic, first published in 1835, look like today?
