Finland sets up International Prize for Gender Equality

The first recipient of the new international prize will be announced later this year. The prize sum of 150 000 euros will be allocated every second year to a project promoting gender equality in the global context.

A strong role of women in decision-making correlates with the economic, social and ecological strength of a country.  Finland, being the first country in the world that provided full political rights for women, is convinced that gender equality is a solution to many problems the world is facing today.  Gender equality is also one of the secrets behind Finland´s own success story from one of the poorest countries in Europe to the top of several global rankings on economy, social justice and sustainable development.

Celebrating the International Women´s Day on March 8th 2017, the government of Finland has decided to set up a new International Prize on Gender Equality. The prize is non-political and will be awarded every second year for an actor, which has remarkably promoted gender equality in the global context. The prize sum, which is 150 000 euros this year, will not be donated to the winner directly but will be allocated to a development project chosen by the winner.  The decision on the International Gender Equality Prize is a component of celebrating the 100 years anniversary of the Independence of Finland.
